T-Mobile notes the "4" in iPhone 4 does not mean 4G

Nearly nine months after Apple's official announcement, T-Mobile finally points out to its customers that the "4" in iPhone 4 does not refer to 4G. T-Mobile's latest advertisement for its HSPA+ network takes a shot at both the Verizon and AT&T iPhone 4 with the two carriers illustrated as turtles, while T-Mobile is a hare. The eye-catching graph points out that T-Mobile has blazing fast 4G handsets while Apple's popular smartphone is still 3G.

This slick marketing piece points out that the "4' in iPhone 4 is not 4G. Most everyone knows that the "4" actually refers to 4th generation, not 4G and trying to imply there is confusion between the terms is stretching it. As is often the case, this promotional material focuses on sensationalistic headlines, not necessarily the truth.

BufferZone Pro sandboxing software now a totally free download

trustware bufferzone pro free download
Trustware's BufferZone was an early entrant into the desktop sandboxing arena. Sandboxing, of course, is the security-by-isolation system which has since been built into apps like Google Chrome and Adobe Reader X. Recently, Trustware launched a promotion and gave away BufferZone Pro for free -- and now the company is making the discount permanent. From now on, BufferZone Pro will be freeware.

But, wait -- BufferZone still doesn't support x64, and maybe you're thinking that there will be a paid version once a 64-bit Windows version arrives. Not so, Trustware's Efrat Schneider told me in an email: "The product will continue to be free," he replied.

If you're looking for a free way to tighten up security on your Windows system, BufferZone is an excellent app for the job. We'll let you know when the 64-bit version becomes available.

Meet The Newest Founders Den Tenant: Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom

Last month, we first wrote about Founders Den, a new "private clubhouse" forentrepreneursin the heart of San Francisco's SoMa district. In that short amount of time, they've grown quickly and are now just about filled to the brim with young entrepreneurs working on a wide range of new startups. But their newest tenant is one they could have never anticipated: Gavin Newsom. Yes, the Lieutenant Governor of California (and former San Francisco Mayor) has decided to forgo space in the stodgy old government buildings in the city and instead will call the Founders Den his home when he's working out of the city (where he still lives).

Comprehend Systems Wants To Make Data Analysis Less Of A Pain

Founded by Rich Morrison and Jud Gardner, Y-Combinator backed Comprehend Systems is launching the first iteration of its comprehensible data analysis platform today, Comprehend Clinical. Comprehend Clinical's browser friendly interface allows its clients to analyze the results of clinical drug trials across multiple data sources, combining that stored in diverse data structures and databases. In the same space as Sas Institute and Pitco, Comprehend Clinical attempts to empower people bringing drugs to market to "ask as the questions they need to ask." When you're dealing with lengthly drug studies you need to know whether the drug is safe and effective, and whether people are dying as a soon as possible. "A clinical study lasts four years, who uses software that's seven years old. By default you're going to have to interface a lot of stuff," says founder Rich Morrison.

South Korea's SK Telecom to offer Apple iPhone starting in March

SK Telecom has confirmed it intends to carry the iPhone 4, ending KT's exclusivity with the popular Apple smartphone. According to the statement, SK Telecom will announce launch and pricing details at a later date. Currently, the wireless carrier leads the pack in South Korea with slight over half of the cellular market. Its current smartphone profile is peppered with Android handsets from local manufacturers LG and Samsung.

With the introduction of the iPhone 4, SK will soon compete directly with its smaller rival KT which has sold various models of the iPhone since November 2009. KT has seen a boost from the iPhone and recently announced it has sold over 2 million units during this time of exclusivity.

Overall, this Asia-Pacific region is a hotbed for Apple products with sales of the iPhone and Mac more than doubling year over year, according to Apple's latest earnings report. This move to bring the iPhone to SK Telecom is part of a larger plan by Apple to expand its user base and boost it sales in the Asia-Pacific region.

Consumers Buy Less Tech Stuff, Keep It Longer

Hugh Pickens writes writes "The NY Times reports that there are indications that a sea change is taking place in consumer behavior as a result of the great recession: Americans are buying less tech stuff and making it last longer (reg. may be required). Although in many cases the difference is mere months, economists and consumers say the approach may outlast a full recovery and the return of easy credit, because of the strong impression the downturn has made on consumers. For example Patti Hauseman stuck with her five-year-old Apple computer until it started making odd whirring noises and occasionally malfunctioning before she bought a new computer for Christmas — actually, a refurbished one. 'A week later, the old one died. We timed it pretty well,' says Hauseman, adding that it was not so much that she could not afford new things, but that the last few years of economic turmoil had left her feeling that she could be stealing from her future by throwing away goods that still had value. Consumers are holding onto new cars for a record 63.9 months, up 4.5 months from a year ago and 14 percent since the end of 2008, according one research firm. Industry analysts also report that people on average are waiting 18 months to upgrade their cellphones, up from every 16 months just a few years ago. 'We're not going back to a time of our grandmothers' tales of what they kept and how they used things so carefully,' says Nancy F. Koehn, a professor at the Harvard Business School and a historian of consumer behavior. 'But we'll see a consistent inching or trudging towards that.'"

Angry Farm is an Angry Birds knockoff for BlackBerry

angry farm angry birds knockoff for blackberry
Angry Birds hasn't been officially ported to the BlackBerry, but a company called Smarter Apps got tired of waiting and produced an unofficial "alternative" called Angry Farm. The gameplay is virtually identical to Angry Birds, but you control farm animals instead of birds, and your opponents are foxes instead of pigs.

Angry Farm has 30 levels and free upgrades for life, and it works on BlackBerry devices running BlackBerry OS 4.6 and up. The cost: $4.99. How blatant can an Angry Birds clone get before Rovio attempts to shut it down? I have a feeling we may be about to find out. Either that, or the real Angry Birds for BlackBerry will come out ...

Blog Post: Making Informed Decisions to Live a Healthy Lifestyle

Slowly but surely, the days are getting longer, and as thoughts turn to spending more time outdoors, we're reminded of the importance that living a healthy lifestyle can have on a child's well-being.  Learning how to be active and eat right is just as an important part of a child's education as math or science or history.

That's why we are excited to partner with NBA All-Star/Boston Celtics captain Paul Pierce to present the All-Star Health & Fitness Festival, to be held this Saturday at Paul's alma mater, Inglewood High School, in Los Angeles. As part of Paul's Truth on Health initiative, the festival is designed to encourage and help youth make informed decisions about living a healthy lifestyle.

Bing will also donate 600 Paul Pierce Activity Watches to students participating in the Health & Fitness Festival.  These watches, which track their daily exercise, allow the students to participate in Pierce's FitClub34 (a rewards-based fan club turned "fit" club) and earn great prizes for their commitment to fitness.

Our friends over in Xbox are also getting in on the fun. There will be a Microsoft Kinect for Xbox 360 set up at one of the fitness stations, demonstrating how being active can be a lot of fun too (we love the boxing game!).

Want to get in on the fun? Courtesy of Xbox, we'll be livestreaming the event through Facebook. Go to http://www.facebook.com/xbox and submit your questions to Paul and other NBA stars in attendance for a chance to see them answered during the live stream.

And to stay up-to-date on the festival and other Bing efforts to support education, be sure to follow @binggives.

TUAW's Daily App: Tiny Wings

Some games and apps picked for our Daily App become hits after they get selected, but others sort of pop out of the App Store as fully-formed hits already, and we just follow along. Tiny Wings is one of the latter. It's already a huge hit, having beat out Angry Birds for the top paid spot on the App Store. If you haven't played it yet, it's definitely worth a try. In Tiny Wings, you're a little bird with (surprise) tiny wings. By touching the screen, you can speed the cute little guy up and down hills that he can ramp off of, trying to travel as far as possible while collecting speed boosts.

Like some of the best games on the App Store, it's hard to explain, but it's very easy to play. Just a moment with Tiny Wings is all it takes to figure it out. The gorgeous art and music make the experience casually excellent; it's very simple to jump into, but kind of tough to master.

I can't recommend Tiny Wings enough. If you haven't picked it up on the App Store for US$0.99 yet, odds are you will soon anyway. This is developer Andreas Illiger's first app, but it looks like he struck gold on his first try.

AVG LiveKive to launch as Dropbox alternative

When you think of AVG, you probably think antivirus -- probably because it has sat near the top of Download.com's list of most downloaded apps for years. AVG has been tapped by tens of millions of users for malware protection, and the company now hopes those same people will turn to it for synchronized cloud storage.

Called AVG LiveKive, the new service will launch in beta form next week -- competing against apps like Dropbox, SugarSync, and SpiderOak. Users will get 5GB of storage for free and while we assume there will be paid options as well, AVG hasn't posted any details yet.

While AVG's post says users will be able to access LiveKive cloud data from "all their synced devices," it's not clear whether there will be mobile companion apps or if this is strictly a desktop app. AVG does already offer antivirus and backup apps for Android, so we expect to see LiveKive hit the Market as well.

3D music video was shot with two iPhone 4s

Forget about the Android-powered LG Optimus 3D with its fancy 3D camera, all you need to make a 3D video is a couple of people, two iPhone 4s, and a healthy dose of enthusiasm for filming. The folks at Atomic Cheesecake productions were up to the challenge and put together a 3D music video recorded entierly using the iPhone 4 and its five-megapixel camera.

The 3d indie video aficiandos put together a semi-fancy rig to align the two iPhone 4s so they could record video and combine the two streams to create a 3D effect. The cameras on the pair of iPhones were controlled by the Almost DSLR app which gives your precise control over the individual settings of the camera. A little bit of post-processing to perfect the 3D and director Ryan Suits has an interesting and innovative video.

The video was produced for musician Luke Hagendorf who is using it for his song Changes We Don't Understand. The 3D video requires those red and cyan glasses to enjoy the full 3D effect but, with or without galsses, you can check out his 3D test video and the music video after the break. Enjoy!

Looking for a slick way to share documents and allow collaborators to add annotations? Check out Crocodoc, which has launched a plug-in free document viewer powered by the standard Web code we both love and hate to refer to as HTML5.

Just like competitor Scribd, files you upload to Crocodoc can be easily embedded on any site (check out a demo after the break). Readers can also post comments and annotations and download documents as a PDF with or without markup applied.

Crocodoc offers a full API and the company's Ryan Damico says it is more focused on attracting developers, whereas Scribd is aimed at publishers. Even so, Crocodoc is an excellent option for users who want to share and embed documents on the Web.

Nook for Android app receives an update

nook

If you are an avid user of the Barnes and Noble Nook for Android application, you will be pleased to know that they have released a rather nice update. In version 2.5 they have listened to their users, and brought some of the most popular features to the application, sadly not all of them will be available to users of 10-inch tablets yet.

For anyone using an Android powered smartphone, or seven inch tablet, the update includes a download progress meter, a wish list feature, as well as a new library grid view, for easy viewing access. For those of you who picked up the Xoom this week, your update is destined to arrive some time this spring, so they have not forgotten about you.

iTunes could get cloud-based backup solution

Late last year I predicted 2011 would be the year of the cloud for Apple, and so far I've been right. I said OS X Lion would be sold via the App Store, and it certainly will. Here's the other part of Apple's cloud strategy: the company is reportedly looking to use the cloud for iTunes, not as a streaming service, but as "insurance," a sort of backup system for the music you already own and have downloaded to your own computer. Specifics are vague; it's not clear how much this would cost or exactly how this would work, and obviously Apple is keeping it all under wraps until it's ready to announce the service completely.

The signs are there: MobileMe is reportedly going online-only, the North Carolina data center is about to come online, and Apple seems primed to introduce a service which would connect your media (and possibly even your contacts and other downloads) across all of your iOS and Mac devices, accessible from any device wherever you happen to have it. I'd bet such a service will be online by the end of this year. We'll have to see what comes of this, but we certainly seem closer than ever to Apple introducing some connection to the cloud in iTunes.

amazon video vod prime
Amazon Prime -- which used to just get you discounted one-day or free two day shipping across the U.S. on all your Amazon purchases -- now includes a pretty nice bonus feature. That's it above: free, on-demand streaming of thousands of TV shows and movies.

Sure, the selection is pretty small compared to what services like Hulu and Netflix offer, but this is a pretty nice freebies to toss at Amazon Prime customers. Or is Amazon Prime now a nice freebie to toss as streaming video customers? Either way, if you're a U.S. resident you can sign up for a one-month trial at no charge to see if Amazon's on-demand video offering floats your boat. Existing Amazon Prime customers should already have access.

As The Next Web points out, this is probably just the first step in Amazon's inevitable march toward a full-blown video on demand service. We're curious to see how things will progress from here.

Blog Post: Visual Search has landed

The wait is finally over as Bing Australia officially launches 'Visual Search', a feature which is bound to be one of our most popular releases ever. How do we know this? A Microsoft study revealed that Visual Search saves you time refining complex queries enabling you to find what you're looking for considerably quicker than by using standard search.

Now, what is it exactly? Visual Search is an additional search tool that offers seamless image galleries where you have the option to scroll or make refinements using the tick-box filters. These can be found on the left-hand side and are individually tailored to each gallery.

Unlike a standard image search, Visual Search galleries are selected and created, in our case specifically for the Australian market, using data from trusted content suppliers.

This intuitive new feature is designed to not only make searching for your favourite subjects easier but also offer a rich visual experience and a simplified way to navigate. See Visual Search for yourself here.

When hovering over an individual image within a gallery, you'll get access to additional content. For example, hovering over a cocktail will bring up its base ingredient, taste and what type of glass it should be served in. Whilst clicking on the image will give you access to the cocktail's web results and comprehensive ingredient list.

You can also access the Visual Search galleries through the web links page. For example, if you type 'martini' into the Bing search box, a snapshot of the Visual Search content will appear amongst the results.

We're always adding to the already impressive list of galleries, which currently includes restaurants, celebrities, recipes, online games, dog and cat breeds and world beaches.

Another is Bing home page images, which gives you access to all of Bing's beautiful past home pages in one easy-to-navigate gallery, where you can narrow your search by the photo's country, category or even colour.

You'll find there is much more to Visual Search than a slick interface. In terms of functionality, this feature can help you source your next travel destination, plan your next meal or compare the attributes of cat breeds to see which one is right for your family.

Enter the world of Visual Search!

My Message To Google: Stop Cheating

In mid February, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt expressed pride in Google employee Wael Ghonim?s brave struggle against the autocratic Mubarak regime to establish political transparency in Egypt. "We are very, very proud of what Wael and that group was able to do in Egypt,? Schmidt said in Barcelona. But what Schmidt needs to do now is apply Ghonim?s views about political transparency to Google?s own search business. With its 70% control of the global online search market, Google?s power to make and break online businesses is unrivalled. So it?s not surprising that website owners want more transparency over the reasons why the often autocratic Google sometimes impose penalties on their businesses. But a report issued last week by the newsnavigator OneNewsPage found a distinct lack of transparency in the search business with 88% of respondents saying that paid search advertising costs lacked transparency, while 24% said that they had experienced large, unexplained falls in site traffic as a consequence of changes in their search engine status.

United Airlines' Credit Card Sign Up Bonus Offer Just Got Even Better

As a long-time United Airlines Mileage Plus member (and admitted air miles hoarder!), I already liked United's Mileage Plus Signature Visa credit card offer -- I regularly recommended it to my readers on Outlaw.

Their improved sign up bonus, however, is positively insane. It went into effect yesterday, February 25th, and at least according to my math it's such a good offer that the airline loses money on it initially.

What changes did they make? The annual fee is now waived for the first year (normally it's $60), and you get a $50 statement credit to your account after your very first purchase on the card. That's not the best part, though.

You also receive 25,000 bonus Mileage Plus points after that first purchase, as opposed to before when you'd have to hit a fairly large spending eligibility threshold. In other words, buy a small cup of coffee on your new card, and you'll net 25,000 air miles -- enough for a free round-trip flight. If you add a second authorized user to your account, you get another 5,000 bonus points, bringing your total to 30,000. Awesome.

To take advantage of this promotion, click on the special application link we published here this morning.

I obviously don't know how long this enhanced sign up bonus will last for, but my guess is not very long. In the past when I've seen offers like this, it will last for a month or two before reverting back to something less spectacular.

Also, with this card you continue to earn 1 mile per $1 spent, so if you start making most of your purchases on the Mileage Plus card, you could earn several additional free flights each year.

View more credit card offers and promotions over on Outlaw.

Disclosures: I used to review credit cards for a living. Also, my web site has a financial relationship with Chase -- we participate in their affiliate program. No financial relationship or position on Visa Inc, United Airlines or any other company mentioned in this story at time of publication.
