Redsn0w iOS 4.2.1 untethered Jailbreak goes beta

Good news jailbreaking fans -- the iPhone Dev Team is up to their old tricks with an untethered jailbreak entering 'beta' for the iPhone 4, iPad and fourth generation iPod touch running iOS 4.2.1. The beta version of redsn0w uses a new 'backup method,' which is referred to as 'Jailbreak Monte' within the program. However, It is strictly for those who don't rely on their iDevice and don't need ultrasn0w carrier unlock according to the Dev Team.

Brave testers who want to join the program will need access to the iOS 4.2 beta 3 firmware for their iDevice of choice, a Mac (sorry Windows users: redsn0w beta is OS X-only for now), and have their iOS 4.2b3 SHSH blobs saved on file with Cydia. If you fulfill the criteria, then head on over to the iPhone Dev Team blog and get in on the action. As of writing the redsn0w jailbreak had seen its third update released in rapid succession, bringing redsn0w to 0.9.7b3.

Once the beta cycle is finished, the iPhone Dev Team intends to make redsn0w 0.9.7 a general release and remove some of the more complicated restrictions, as well as provide a Windows version of the program. God's speed and good luck to the Dev Team and their courageous beta testers. May jailbreaking come easy and custom apps flow forthwith, because we all know how annoying it is to rely on a tethered jailbreak reboot process, especially when playing with unstable apps and system hacks.

Opera 11 downloaded 6.7 million times on day one -- thanks to the power of bacon

While Opera 11's warm reception had a lot to do with a greatly improved browser and a very loyal fan base, the boys in Oslo had one clever trick up their sleeve which they saved for launch day. And with nearly 7 million downloads in 24 hours, you've got to hand it to Opera: they know how to tempt a geek.

How'd they do it? By dangling delicious bacon in front of Reddit users. You've got to admit, the Opera 11 Web advert is at least as enticing as those Evony ads -- you know which ones I'm talking about.

As for those of us who already tried Opera 11 and knew it was a solid browser... well, if you're like me, you're probably just craving some sizzlin' hot bacon right about now.

Curse you, Opera!

Microsoft Security Essentials 2 available for download, now an even better free antivirus for Windows

There's really no question what the most popular, free antivirus program for Windows is here at Download Squad. You, our readers, make it pretty clear whenever we post about the topic that Microsoft Security Essentials is at the top of the heap -- and we tend to agree. With detection rates every bit as good as some competing paid products (and better than many), MSE might just be the best piece of free software Microsoft has ever released.

And it's just gotten better, with the official arrival of Security Essentials 2. The upgrade adds several key improvements, not the least of which is a heuristic scanning engine. One of the big knocks against its predecessor was that MSE's protection relied too heavily upon definitions -- and in today's ever-changing threat landscape, definitions just aren't enough. Still, I never had a single machine at home become infected while running MSE 1, so now that version 2 includes heuristic kung-fu I'm even less concerned about the safety of my Windows PCs.

MSE 2 also offers improved defense by better integrating with existing Windows features. The updated app adds muscle to the Windows Firewall and Internet Explorer to offer increased protection against network and Web-based threats. There's also a new network inspection feature which uses the Windows Filtering Platform in Vista and Windows 7 -- XP users won't benefit from this feature, obviously.

If you're already running MSE, check your update tab for an upgrade notification -- your system tray icon may also be orange if the update is available. You can also download Security Essentials 2 manually from this page and install over the old version.

Apple said to increase Q1 order for iPhones to 20-21 million

At least that's the word from Taiwan-based iPhone suppliers. In a report today from DigitTimes, sources are quoted as saying Apple has upped its global shipment goal for the first quarter of 2011 from 19 million units to more than 20 million.

Even more interesting, but hardly surprising, the same sources say Apple has ordered 5-6 million phones in that run to be CDMA models. Verizon anyone?

The iPhone's 4th quarter global shipments are pegged at about 15.5 million phones, with a estimated 47 million phones shipped for all of 2010. Apple is estimated to have sold about 50 million iPhones in the previous 2 years, so if these estimates are close, and Apple sells all the iPhones it has ordered, 2011 is looking pretty good.

Apple Forces Steve Jobs Action Figure Off eBay

Hugh Pickens writes "Kevin Parrish writes in Tom's Guide that last month, just in time for Christmas holiday gift-giving, M.I.C. Gadget manufacture and sale of a Steve Jobs action figure featuring an oversized head, Steve's trademark black shirt/blue jeans outfit, and a new iPhone 4 like a magical world-saving talisman in Jobs' left hand. The action figure, selling for $79.90, came with an Apple logo stand and cartoon balloons for writing custom messages. Soon a warning letter from Apple stated that the figurine violated a California statute prohibiting the use of a person's likeness in a product without prior authorization and sales ceased. But shortly after production stopped, the figurines began to appear on eBay selling for up to $2,500. Now Apple's lawyers have raided the online marketplace, zeroing in on one Canadian eBay seller who had already sold the figurine for $1,125 and eBay has removed other listings, telling sellers that the object for sale 'violates a celebrity's right of publicity.'"

Steve Jobs named Person of the Year by the Financial Times

Calling Apple's turn-around over the last ten years "the most remarkable comeback in modern business history," the UK's Financial Times (free registration required) newspaper on Wednesday named Apple CEO Steve Jobs its "Person of the Year" for 2010. Thirty years after Jobs brought the company public at age 25, the proclamation focuses on his determined attention to detail and reputation as someone who "understands the art of the possible" with the ability to convince others of the plausibility of his ideas.

In talking to Financial Times, Roger McNamee, who recently attempted to rebuild Palm in Apple's image, said "Steve's the last of the great builders. What makes him different is that he's creating jobs and economic activity out of thin air while just about every other CEO in America is working out ways to cut costs and lay people off."

2010 has definitely been a good year for Apple, with MarketWatch naming Steve Jobs CEO of the Decade earlier this month and four Apple products making it onto Time Magazine's Top 10 Gadgets list right in time for the holidays. If estimates of Apple selling 100 million iPhones and 48 million iPads next year are correct, 2011 should be a fantastic year as well for Mr. Jobs and company.
