“When the sweet showers of April have pierced to the root the dryness of March and bathed every vein in moisture by which strength are the flowers brought forth … then people long to go on pilgrimages.”
So wrote Geoffrey Chaucer in “The Canterbury Tales.” Spring is here in the Northern Hemisphere, and the flowers are indeed being “brought forth.” Pink rhododendrons and white flowering pear trees have already begun to brighten up my neighborhood in Washington state.
What better way to celebrate spring than a pilgrimage to see flowers in bloom? In a new slide show on Bing Travel, we report on 11 wildflower walks and treks. They range from quick, do-it-yourself strolls through California poppy fields north of Los Angeles to organized, weeklong Sierra Club outings in Wyoming, Germany, Austria or Nepal. And if you’re looking for a serious flower safari, the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve in South Africa will let you meander among 750 species of plants before you retire for the night at a luxurious lodge.
