Google is using a little-known feature of Android to reach out and remove malicious Android apps from phones.
Last Tuesday, Google discovered 21 apps in the Android Marketplace that secretly steal data from Android phones. Google immediately removed the apps and contacted law enforcement. Over the course of the week, the company found several more.
Last night in a blog post, Android security lead Rich Cannings explained that Google will use Android's remote application removal feature to wipe the bad apps from affected phones. Google is also pushing a security update to all affected phones that will close the hole used by the malware to collect data.
Google also says it's taking steps to prevent similar problems in the future. Earlier this week, Google acquired security firm Zynamics, which could help it close these kinds of security holes.
